Exploring Academic Exploration Overseas through Princeton IIP (International Internship Program)
For undergraduate students at Princeton University, the International Internship Program (IIP) presents a unique opportunity to embark on fully-funded research internships abroad. Eligible students, often freshmen, sophomores, or juniors, can apply through designated platforms during specific application windows.
One such program, the Derian Summer Internship in Community-Engaged Scholarship, offers international or community research internships. To be eligible, students must be enrolled during the spring semester before and the fall semester after the internship. Applications open early January, placements are confirmed by March, and internships begin around June, lasting 6 to 8 weeks.
Although the IIP may not be explicitly labelled as such, the Derian internship and other Princeton-supported internships represent typical fully-funded research internship opportunities, including those abroad, organised through Princeton’s programs.
The IIP offers internships across Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia, covering various fields. Last summer, for instance, an undergraduate student, Xander Jenkin, participated in a research internship hosted by the Cardiff University School of Physics & Astronomy.
During his time there, Xander worked with large data sets from radio telescopes and wrote code to process the data. The experience was enriching, as he had opportunities to meet researchers from all over the UK and attend the National Astronomy Meeting. The Physics & Astronomy department at Cardiff University was warm and welcoming, making Xander feel like a graduate student.
Interestingly, many students in the program worked in Engineering Physics, Computer Science, and not just Astrophysics. This diversity reflects the interdisciplinary nature of modern research.
For those considering a research internship abroad, the IIP offers a chance to gain both research and industry experience. The application for the Summer 2024 cycle will be available on Monday, December 4th at 3:00 pm Eastern.
It's worth noting that the advisers in the program are very flexible with what project students work on, ensuring a personalised and enriching experience for each participant.
For official confirmation and detailed information about the IIP, students should contact Princeton program coordinators or visit Princeton’s official process and internship webpages. The IIP is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience that can influence one's future career choices.
As the Natural Sciences Correspondent, I encourage all eligible undergraduate students to consider applying for the IIP and embark on an unparalleled research adventure.
- The Derian Summer Internship in Community-Engaged Scholarship, along with other Princeton-supported internships, provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to venture into fully-funded research internships across various fields such as science, space-and-astronomy, education-and-self-development, and online-learning, many of which are abroad.
- For example, an undergraduate student, Xander Jenkin, recently undertook a research internship in the Cardiff University School of Physics & Astronomy, where he worked with large data sets from radio telescopes, demonstrating the range of opportunities available for learning and growth through the IIP.
