World Ranger Day is set to be celebrated on August 1st within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön, a beautiful protected area in Germany. This event aims to recognise and honour the vital role of rangers in safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage within the reserve.

The festivities will take place at the Wanderparkplatz Schwarzes Moor, offering a varied and informative program suitable for the whole family. Interested parties can learn about the diverse tasks of rangers, gain insights into topics such as insect diversity and the protection of core zones, and participate in educational workshops.

Rangers in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön play a crucial role by monitoring and managing the landscape to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem health, protecting species and habitats from degradation or harmful human activities, serving as educators and guides to visitors, and assisting in research and conservation projects that support sustainable development goals.

This year's World Ranger Day also seeks to draw attention to the sometimes dangerous working conditions faced by rangers worldwide. Over 100 rangers lose their lives each year due to violence, poaching, and lack of equipment, particularly in Africa and Asia.

The event offers a special offer for young nature enthusiasts: children and families can build nesting aids and learn playfully about native bird species with the Junior Rangers. Several thematic guided tours will take place at 14:00, including tours about the world of insects, care zones of the biosphere reserve, and the unique ecosystem of the Schwarzes Moor.

No registration is required for the guided tours. The event at Wanderparkplatz Schwarzes Moor will run from 12 to 16 hours, providing ample opportunity for visitors to experience the ranger profession up close and discover the nature of the Rhön in a new way.

Currently, 13 rangers are on duty in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön, with 7 in Hesse and 6 in Bavaria. Their responsibilities include nature conservation, education for sustainable development, landscape care, monitoring, visitor guidance in protected areas, and digital ranger duties for internet visitor guidance.

Join us in celebrating World Ranger Day and supporting the essential work of these guardians of the biosphere's natural and cultural resources. Let's promote awareness about conservation and the challenging work of rangers in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

  1. Delve into the world of environmental science by participating in World Ranger Day's educational workshops, which cover topics like insect diversity and the protection of core zones within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön.
  2. Expand your knowledge beyond the natural world and explore the realm of education-and-self-development by joining the Junior Rangers program, where you can learn about native bird species and build nesting aids in a fun, interactive way.
