Enhancing neighborly practices, a new scheme at Brown University aids students in transitioning to off-campus dwelling
Brunonians Living Off Campus (BLOC) is an organisation designed to help Brown University students navigate the transition from campus housing to living spaces in Kansas City. As the final phase of the programme focuses on building neighbourhood relationships, BLOC encourages proactive communication and neighbourly acts to foster a positive community impact.
In the second year of its operation, BLOC is expanding its resources to support graduate students and new staff members joining the Brown community, as mentioned by Jordan, the unnamed leader of the expansion. The organisation aims to help students manage student loans and avoid landlord fees, and introduces them to key community expectations, such as local noise and trash ordinances.
Claire Santoro, a Providence resident, appreciates the neighbourhood feel and the positive impact of students integrating into the community. She shares that Brown students, like Allison Stein and Kyle Wisialowski, enrich the neighbourhood's mix with their presence. Allison found the winter break checklist provided by BLOC helpful, while Kyle enjoyed living off campus during his senior year and believes it helped him feel more integrated into the Providence community.
BLOC provides students with tools and tips for independent living, including choosing roommates, setting budgets, and managing utilities during the first phase of the programme. To make introductions with neighbours more intentional, BLOC offers cards featuring prompts like name, phone number, and concentration.
Events on campus, such as those where city officials provide information about services and guidelines for students, are also hosted by BLOC. The organisation highlights seasonal farmers markets, neighbourhood festivals, and cultural celebrations for students to engage with the community.
Recently, BLOC hosted a block party on campus, bringing together more than 300 Brown and Providence community members for a family-friendly event. Al Giuliano, from Providence's Department of Public Works, educated students about recycling guidelines and proper disposal of bulky items at the event.
As the city of Providence offers many services that students may not be aware of, BLOC aims to bridge the gap between students and the community. Students are encouraged to connect with their neighbourhood associations and consider ways to get involved. With the programme's expansion, the Office of Residential Life hopes to further support graduate students and other Brown community members in their transition to living spaces in Kansas City.
