Private Education Blooms in Romania: Mark Twain International School's Expansion Plans Unveiled

Private education in Romania is on the rise, with an estimated 7% of primary school students now enrolled in private institutions. One such education powerhouse is Mark Twain International School (MTIS), the pioneer of dual curriculum education in Romania, celebrating its 30-year milestone as a beacon of modern, student-centered learning.

Anca Macovei Vlașceanu, the dynamic force behind MTIS and a champion of educational entrepreneurship, was bestowed the title of "Architect of Future Education" at the Women in Economy 2025 Gala. Her innovative strategies and commitment to upholding international standards within Romania's education system were recognized.

The glittering ceremony, held at the Romanian Athenaeum, was orchestrated by the National Confederation for Female Entrepreneurship in Romania (CONAF) and honored ten ground-breaking women across various industries.

"Winning the 'Architect of Future Education' award is a glorious honor, but it’s more about the renewed responsibility and dedication I feel towards my life's mission as an educator, entrepreneur, and leader in EDUCATION. Although it seems like an individual achievement, this accolade acknowledges the tireless work and accomplishments of the Mark Twain International School community over the past three decades, both in Romania and globally, as an International Baccalaureate World School," shared Anca upon receiving the award.

The expansion plan initiated by Anca and her family, along with Morphosis Capital, aims to tackle two primary objectives:

  • Shaping the Romania Education Alliance (REA): Romania's first educational network will form alliances with successful private schools across major cities, including Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Brasov, Sibiu, Constanța, Timișoara, and Bacău.
  • Cultivating the MTIS network within REA: Through opening new, state-of-the-art campuses adhering to MTIS values, principles, and best practices, the expansion will target families in key urban areas.

Three noteworthy projects are underway:

  • The new Mark Twain IS Cosmopolis campus: Nestled in the heart of Ilfov County, the campus will sprawl across nearly one hectare, boasting a sports field, playgrounds, and green spaces near Lake Cretuleasca. Spanning 8,000 sqm, the educational buildings will accommodate Kindergarten, Primary School, and Middle School units, catering to over 800 students. The enterprise exceeds €10 million and is being developed in collaboration with Opus Land Development, with a planned opening in September 2025.
  • The Mark Twain International School Flagship Campus: Situated in the northern part of Bucharest, this cutting-edge educational ecosystem will span 60,000 sqm and invest €20 million, in partnership with Partener Construct Logistic. With academic, sports, and cultural facilities gracing the lakeshore in Balotes block, the campus will serve over 1,200 students aged 2-18. The campus is scheduled to open in September 2026.
  • Preliminary discussions are also ongoing for the construction of an innovative school campus, forming part of an extensive urban renewal project in Bucharest. This urban oasis will span 4,000 sqm and accommodate 400 Kindergarten and Primary School students, with an expected opening in September 2027, boasting a total investment of over €5 million.

Since 1995, more than 5,000 students from Romania and over 60 other countries have been part of the MTIS community. Currently, approximately 650 students are enrolled in the school's two pre-university divisions – a bilingual Romanian-English division and an international division.

MTIS graduates have applied to and been accepted into over 150 prestigious universities in Romania and over 30 countries worldwide, including UCLA, Stanford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Berklee Boston, Guildhall School London, EH Lausanne, and Babes-Bolyai Cluj.
