Domestic Abode of Combat
The political landscape in Berlin is gearing up for a significant shift, with the latest polls indicating a potential election victory for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with a score of 25%.
Among the contenders is Steffen Krach, the designated SPD top candidate. Krach, who served as State Secretary for Science, has been a prominent figure in Berlin's political sphere. Despite being nominally a man of the second row, Krach de facto acted as Berlin's Minister of Science, a testament to his expertise and assertiveness, qualities that are not disputed even beyond the SPD.
Krach's congenial partner during late-hour music during faction exams, Björn Böhning, is now the decisive SPD coordinator in the coalition committee as State Secretary in the federal government. This close partnership could prove beneficial for the SPD in the upcoming election.
The Greens, led by Bettina Jarasch, are in a unique position due to the potential car-free vote in Berlin. However, Jarasch has expressed concerns about the political and practical implications of the citizens' initiative for a car-free city. The election next year will determine whether the Greens' answers fit the questions that will be decisive in the election.
Werner Graf, a potential Green leader of the House of Representatives, is confident that the Greens have the best solutions for the election. The Greens and SPD are close behind the Left Party and the CDU in the latest polls, making the race for the top spot highly competitive.
The Left Party, currently at the top in the left camp, has seen a surge in membership since October, growing from 8,300 members to over 16,000. However, the party has lost prominent figures due to internal disputes, a topic of discussion as the party prepares for the election. Kerstin Wolter could lead the Left Party as the top candidate in the House of Representatives election.
A Kenya coalition, consisting of the SPD, Greens, and CDU, existed in Brandenburg from 2019 to 2024. This historical coalition could influence the dynamics of the upcoming election in Berlin.
The AfD is also among the parties in the latest polls, adding another layer of complexity to the election landscape.
Krach has stated that no company will be expropriated, a stance that was supported by the SPD state party conference's decision in mid-2022 in favour of an expropriation law. This stance could appeal to voters who are wary of radical economic policies.
The officially confirmed SPD lead candidate for the Berlin state election on September 20, 2026, is Steffen Krach, who was unanimously nominated by the Berlin SPD board and is expected to be formally confirmed at a party congress on November 15, 2025. With Krach at the helm, the SPD is preparing for a fierce battle in the upcoming election.
