Dogs Prove Invaluable in Conservation Efforts, Detecting Hidden Species

Dogs are proving invaluable in conservation efforts, as demonstrated by two leading experts, Svenja Kremling and Dr. Annegret Grimm-Seyfarth. They emphasize the importance of well-trained dogs and humans, along with proper permits and search strategies, in detecting hidden species.

Grimm-Seyfarth's company, Monitoring-Dogs, specializes in using dogs to detect hidden species like otters, salamanders, or toads in open-cast mines. Her work includes projects in the Niederlausitzer forest and woodlands, conducted in collaboration with the Lausitzer Jagdhunde Akademie.

Kremling, leading an art search dog project for the Lower Saxony State Forests (NLF), trains dogs to detect protected or invasive species. Her Irish Terrier, Tilda, is skilled in sniffing out the beetle species Anoplophora. Both experts highlight the dogs' superior scent detection, with a membrane ranging from 1100 to 2000 cubic millimeters, compared to humans' 2.4 to 3 cubic millimeters.

Sniffer dogs are widely used by police, rescue teams, scientists, and conservationists for various purposes. The NNA's digital short format on art search dogs attracted significant international interest, with several hundred viewers from Germany and other countries. The Wildlife Detection Dogs association aims to connect users, exchange information, and work on standardization and quality assurance.

Dogs' exceptional scent detection abilities make them crucial in conservation efforts. Experts like Kremling and Grimm-Seyfarth are using these skills to map species for nature conservation and wildlife management, with their work gaining international recognition.
