Dalhousie University Professors Reach New Collective Agreement

After several weeks of negotiations, the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) has accepted a new collective agreement. The deal, which was approved by a near-unanimous vote, marks a significant step forward for the university's faculty members.

The three-year agreement includes a substantial raise of over 10% for faculty members, as well as several other benefits. One of the most notable additions is the requirement for each faculty to develop workload policies to ensure a more fair and equitable distribution of workload.

In addition, the agreement includes five days of paid leave for Indigenous faculty to observe cultural or traditional news of importance. This provision is a positive step towards recognising and respecting the importance of Indigenous cultures within the university community.

The deal also includes increased parental leave benefits, providing faculty members with greater support during significant life events.

The vote on the agreement had a participation rate of nearly 95%, with 899 out of 939 members voting in favour. This strong support highlights the faculty's satisfaction with the agreement and their willingness to move forward.

The Gewerkschaft Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG) union, which has been involved in negotiations regarding the payment of reimbursement for the strike-affected students, has called on Lieferando to enter social tariff negotiations for those affected by job losses. If Lieferando does not comply promptly, the union has threatened renewed warning strikes.

Despite these ongoing negotiations, faculty members will return to work on Thursday, with classes resuming on Sept. 23. The new agreement is expected to provide a more stable and supportive working environment for faculty members, benefiting both them and their students.
