Dakota County's 4-H program for animal identification and ear tagging procedure

In just a few weeks, a significant deadline is looming for all 4-H members participating in the upcoming Minnesota Fair. By May 15, all 4-H project animals must be identified and registered in the 4-H Online system.

To facilitate this process, families are encouraged to complete the Tag Request Form to order ear tags. This will give the staff adequate time to coordinate tag and tagger pick-ups. Ear taggers are available for use.

It's essential to note that families are responsible for identifying their 4-H project animals. The identification process can be completed through the 4-H Online Link.

Each animal category, including beef breeding heifers, cow/calf pairs, prospect calves (steers and heifers), dairy, dairy goats, dogs, horses, llama-alpacas, meat goats, poultry (doves and pigeons), rabbits, sheep, and swine, is subject to this deadline.

To ensure a smooth process, it's recommended to review the MN 4-H Animal Science identification requirements table. This document outlines the specific ID requirements for each animal species, with changes made for cattle in 2025.

For those leasing animals, a completed Minnesota 4-H Lease Information Form must be uploaded into 4-H Online by May 15, including 4-H Online ID information.

Should you have any questions regarding the process, feel free to contact Jessica Beissel at 651-210-0762 or [email protected], or Cherie Frandrup at 651-480-7702 or [email protected].

Lastly, it's important to mention that this deadline is a statewide ID deadline. The Animal ID'ing in 4-H Online document provides detailed instructions on entering animal ID information.

Don't forget, by May 15, you must apply the appropriate ID to your animal to participate in the Minnesota Fair 2025. Let's make this a successful and well-organised event for all!
