Contested elections for Ducsu: 509 candidacies submitted for top posts, 1,109 for studio dormitory positions
The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election is underway, with a total of 1,109 nomination papers submitted for the 28 posts up for grabs.
According to the figures announced by the Chief Returning Officer, Professor Dr Md Jashim Uddin, at a press conference held at the Senate Bhaban on August 20, a total of 509 students filed nominations.
The election, which marks an important event in the university's academic calendar, has seen a significant participation from the students. The number of nomination forms distributed for the election was 658, out of which 149 were not returned.
Among the residential halls, Ziaur Rahman Hall led with 78 nomination submissions, followed closely by Sgt Jahurul Huq Hall with 81 submissions. Sufia Kamal Hall had 40 submissions, while Rokeya Hall and Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall received 45 and 65 nomination submissions respectively.
Other halls such as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Amar Ekushey Hall, Salimullah Muslim Hall, Jasimuddin Hall, Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Sir AF Rahman Hall, Shamsunnahar Hall, Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, Surya Sen Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, and Shahidullah Hall also saw a good number of nominations.
However, an inquiry committee submitted a report regarding a specific complaint received about one hall, and this matter will be reviewed in a later evening meeting.
The election is a crucial opportunity for students to voice their concerns, participate in decision-making processes, and contribute to the betterment of the university. The exact number of candidates for each post will be known after the scrutiny of the nomination papers.
The press conference was held to provide transparency and ensure that the election process is fair and unbiased. One candidate was admitted for each post in the Central Student Committee of Dhaka University after the examination.
The Ducsu election is a significant event that reflects the spirit of democracy within the university. The election results, which will be announced soon, are eagerly awaited by the students and the university community.
