Climate Action by Copenhagen students - Examining the City's Approach to Environmental Preservation

In the wake of the Ahr Valley flood catastrophe four years ago, as temperatures soar under the present heat wave, one cannot help but wonder: What's the state of our climate now?

Climate Action by Copenhagen students - Examining the City's Approach to Environmental Preservation

Koblenz, a city situated along the Rhine, is taking a significant step towards assessing its climate protection measures. On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, students from the University of Applied Sciences for Social Development (HfGG) will present the findings of their Climate Check at a public event.

The event, taking place from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at Kornpfortstraße 15, will include a panel discussion with guests from politics, city administration, and civil society. Alexandra Kraatz, Charlotte Keul, Loriana Metzger, and Astrid Fries are among the panelists.

The Climate Check, conducted by students from the Bachelor's program "Economics - Sustainability - Transformation" at the HfGG, analysed 35 communal political measures across six sectors: energy, heat, transport, industry, agriculture, and administration. The aim is to make climate protection more feasible on a local level, as outlined by Stadt.Land.Klima!'s goal.

The HfGG's vision, a sustainable world: a living and diverse nature, a solidarity-based and democratic society, and a fair and life-serving economy, is reflected in this initiative. The University, a state-recognized and ideologically independent institution in Koblenz with approximately 160 students, is the location for the public event.

For more information, visit www.hfgg.de/events. Admission to the event is free and no prior registration is required.

The Climate Check uses the Stadt.Land.Klima! ranking system, a nationwide initiative for communal climate protection that has developed a ranking with 35 easily measurable measures for communal climate protection. These measures make the political will for communal climate protection visible, measurable, and comparable throughout Germany.

The Climate Check provides an overview of already implemented climate protection measures in Koblenz and identifies areas where more work is needed. While specific findings from the Climate Check are not yet publicly available, it can be reasonably inferred that the student efforts likely focused on evaluating how well Koblenz implements climate protection measures such as emission reductions, adaptation strategies, public awareness, and cross-sector cooperation, especially in the context of challenges posed by Rhine warming and flood risks.

The HfGG offers study programs including the Bachelor's program "Economics - Sustainability - Transformation" (OENT), as well as two Master's programs, "Economics - Sustainability - Social Development" (ONG) and "Economics - Responsibility - Institutional Design" (OVI). These programs reflect the university's commitment to fostering sustainable solutions for the future.

  1. The Climate Check, part of the student's learning journey in the Bachelor's program "Economics - Sustainability - Transformation" at the University of Applied Sciences for Social Development (HfGG), focuses on environmental-science issues like climate-change and its impact on the Rhine's ecosystem.
  2. The student's lifelong-learning and education-and-self-development is evident in the HfGG's initiative to assess Koblenz's climate protection measures, as they strive to advocate for a sustainable world through policy and science.
  3. The HfGG study programs, such as the Bachelor's program "Economics - Sustainability - Transformation," bridge the gap between science and education, empowering students to address challenges like climate-change and contribute to a fair and life-serving economy.
