BRICS+ Fashion Summit Highlights India's Growing Fashion Influence
The BRICS+ Fashion Summit, held in Moscow at the end of August, served as a platform for dialogue and action, exploring opportunities for mutual growth in the fashion industry. The Summit, an influential international platform for emerging regions, attracted delegations from various countries, including key members of the BRICS bloc and expanding members from Asia.
Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and a member of the BoF 500 list, participated in the Summit. The Indian delegation, led by FDCI, returned to Moscow for the third consecutive time for the event.
One of the highlights of the Summit was the presentation of the new collection, Armoure, by Shantnu and Nikhil Mehra. The collection combined 1930s glamour with Renaissance-inspired silhouettes, showcasing the designers' creativity and innovation. Making their debut at the Summit was a crucial step for the brand, as it allowed them to present their new collection and lay the foundation for a long-term presence in the region.
Pawan Sachedeva, the designer behind the New Delhi-based fashion house bearing his name, also showcased its latest collection at the Summit. Sachedeva expressed high expectations for cultural exchanges and increasing mutual influence in the apparel industry between the countries, stating that events like the BRICS+ Fashion Summit serve as a powerful platform for cross-cultural exchange and international collaboration in the fashion industry.
Nandini Bhalla, Editor-in-Chief of The Word Magazine, shared insights on India's contemporary fashion market. She stated that India is the fastest-growing fashion market and has a high direct-to-customer budget due to its large number of social media users.
The "Regional Session: Asia" at the BRICS+ Fashion Summit featured representatives from India, Malaysia, and Indonesia discussing the development of the region's fashion ecosystem, sustainable practices, and new international cooperation opportunities shaping Asia's global presence. The countries represented at the Regional Session: Asia included BRICS members and expanded members from Asia such as China, India, Indonesia (which joined BRICS in January 2025), Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Antonio Maurizio Grioli, Dean at Pearl Academy, participated in the Summit session and spoke about changes in India's education system. He mentioned that education in India has seen a shift, with the Indian Government strengthening the value of national education. Grioli also emphasised the importance of craft in India and the need to sustain and support it.
The BRICS+ Fashion Summit served as a platform for moving from dialogue to action, providing opportunities for mutual growth in the fashion industry. As India continues to grow as a key player in the global fashion market, events like the BRICS+ Fashion Summit are crucial for showcasing its fashion achievements, sharing insights, and strengthening cooperation with representatives from BRICS countries and beyond.
