Boosting Micro-Businesses Through Comprehensive Training in Regional Languages for Successful Implementation of Digital Resources

In the heart of Maharashtra, Ms. Yamini Choudhary, a bulk tailoring business owner, found a lifeline during the Covid-19 pandemic. She used Digital Saksham, a project designed to equip entrepreneurs with the digital skills necessary to thrive in the modern age, to showcase her products on the Government e-marketplace (GeM) portal. Now, Ms. Choudhary is exploring opportunities to augment orders on the government's platform.

Digital Saksham, a brainchild of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, is shaping a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the digital age. The project aims to augment and enrich the digital capabilities of businesses, particularly micro enterprises, by streamlining accessibility, interactivity, and community support.

The project offers a diverse range of training programs and resources, tailored to address the evolving needs of the digital age. These programs are provided in various regional languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Odia, Marathi, Assamese, and Kannada, ensuring inclusivity for all.

In India, the micro sector with an estimated 630.52 lakh enterprises accounts for more than 99% of the total estimated number of 633.88 MSMEs. Digital Saksham is making a significant impact by offering training programs that cover a range of skills essential for thriving in the digital era.

The project is organising training for micro-enterprises in 13 states and 55 clusters. In Uttar Pradesh, Digital Saksham is promoting cultural preservation and economic progress by blending modern technology with traditional handicrafts. Examples of successful initiatives in Uttar Pradesh include the Digital Saree Emporium, Digital Silk Route, Digital Leathercraft, Digital Jewellery Atelier, and Digital Flavours.

To resolve geographical boundaries and integrate these micro-enterprises in the formal economy, the trainers support the entrepreneurs with Udyam Registration. In Odisha, trainers are working with tribal micro-entrepreneurs to help them understand their status as MSMEs and learn about government schemes for MSMEs.

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), launched by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), is another initiative supporting MSMEs in India digitally. The project involves collaboration with over 2 lakh MSMEs through MSME-Mart, across multiple states and clusters, with initiatives like 'Feet on Street' and ONDC Academy to onboard and educate sellers in various locations.

Digital Saksham is more than just a training platform. It focuses on the impact of digital literacy on personal and community development. By empowering individuals irrespective of their prior exposure to technology, the project is creating a ripple effect, transforming lives and businesses across India.
