Baden-Württemberg's MOVERS Program Boosts Safe School Mobility

Baden-Württemberg's Ministries of the Interior, Digitalization and Communities, Education, Youth and Sports, and Transportation have collaborated on the MOVERS program. This initiative supports schools and municipalities in promoting safe, active mobility among children and enhancing traffic conditions around schools.

The MOVERS program offers a comprehensive, cross-sectoral solution. It aims to strengthen children's independent mobility and reduce traffic chaos around schools. The Ministry of Transport has played a key role, providing municipalities with clear legal foundations and practical support through the MOVERS advisory service.

In August, the ministry simplified municipal planning with the decree 'Hints on the traffic and street law implementation of school streets and school zones'. Kirchheim unter Teck was one of the first municipalities to implement a school zone, with the Freihof Schools working on a concept with MOVERS support. Deputy Minister President Thomas Strobl and Transport Minister Winfried Hermann visited Kirchheim unter Teck to see the school zone demonstration.

The MOVERS program's goal is to create a quieter, safer environment for children on their way to school. It offers individual measures like school route planning, bike-friendly school awards, and bike parking promotion. With the Ministry of Transport's support, more municipalities are expected to follow Kirchheim unter Teck's example and implement school zones.
