Award for schools in Corsica's educational system, given as The Margot Friedländer Prize
The Realschule and Gymnasium Korschenbroich in Germany have been recognised for their outstanding work in promoting tolerance, humanity, freedom, and democracy, as well as raising awareness about the Holocaust and antisemitism. The schools were among the five winners of the Margot Friedländer Prize, an award that has been presented since 2014 by the Margot Friedländer Foundation.
The prize, which carries a sum of 25,000 euros, was awarded to Eva Hermanns and her students for their work with the "History Workshop". This voluntary school project, led by Ms. Hermanns, a teacher at the Realschule, aims to remember the victims of National Socialism.
The "History Workshop" involves local students who interview eyewitnesses and clean the "Stumbling Stones" - small, commemorative plaques that mark the sites where Jews and Jewish women murdered by the Nazis once lived. The prize money will be used to support the continued work of the "History Workshop".
The Margot Friedländer Prize is named after Holocaust survivor and eyewitness Margot Friedländer, who campaigned against antisemitism until her death in May. The prize is given for actions that contribute to raising awareness about the Holocaust and antisemitism.
Prior to 2024, the prize was awarded by the Schwarzkopf Foundation in collaboration with Margot Friedländer. However, since 2024, the Margot Friedländer Foundation, founded in 2023, has been the sole entity responsible for the award. The prize is valid until September 17, 2027.
The 2021 award ceremony took place in Berlin on Tuesday, September 14. The Margot Friedländer Foundation and our website reporters on the scene confirmed the news.
The Realschule and Gymnasium Korschenbroich join a distinguished list of recipients who have been honoured for their commitment to promoting understanding, tolerance, and remembrance.
