In collaboration with over 200,000 daycares across 10 Indian states, Rocket Learning, a New Delhi-based edtech and childhood nonprofit, has introduced an innovative AI-powered early childhood learning program. This comprehensive initiative, designed to be a high engagement, low-stress way to engage and assess young learners, is making waves in the education sector.

The AI grading tool at the heart of this program is designed to digitally capture and analyse children's creative outputs, such as drawings and poems, to track individual growth and learning pace. By personalising lessons based on each child's progress, the system fosters better engagement and supports holistic development.

The accuracy of the AI grading tool ranges from 90% to 95%, and it is designed not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Wrong answers serve as a tool for student-teacher interaction, encouraging more interactions between students and human educators.

The development of the AI grading tool was aided by a $1.5 million Google.org grant, and Google experts are helping Rocket Learning develop an AI tutor for the program using machine learning.

The deployment of Rocket Learning's AI grading tool has led to increased utilization of the platform and more interaction between families working with Rocket Learning. Visible child engagement and progress encourage parents who were previously hesitant to support early education attendance.

In addition to grading, the AI system also provides personalized problems for students and incorporates gamification, making learning a fun and engaging experience. Users are instructed to ask their teachers about wrong answers or call a specific number if they need help.

This AI-enabled grading and monitoring approach offers several benefits, including personalised learning, digital record-keeping, increased parental support, bridging urban-rural gaps, and comprehensive child development. The nonprofit aims to make exercises available in English and other languages in the future.

Sunil, the founder of Rocket Learning, believes that AI technology, particularly generative AI, has a lot of potential to help low-income students and students in general. He advocates for the use of guard rails and the employment of large language models (LLMs) to save human time and effort in the education field.

Rocket Learning's AI worksheet grading tool is open source, allowing for collaboration and continuous improvement in the education sector. The program also pairs teachers with small groups of parents who connect through online communities, aiming to help parents teach early learning competencies to their children.

Sunil believes that with the right design, edtech can start leading the revolution in AI rather than living through it. This forward-thinking approach is shaping the future of education in India and beyond.
