Anticipation mounts at Urfa University as they brace for a ruling on the rector election

At Ural Federal University, the rector election saga continues as they wait for government instructions. Currently, Victor Koksharov is still serving as the acting head.

While the Supervisory Council can recommend a candidate for the rector position, they can't decide on the election procedure or date. It's important to understand that rectors in federal universities like UrFU are usually appointed by government decision, not elected.

It's worth noting that traditionally, this appointment process involves University governance internal mechanisms to identify and support a candidate, only for the final approval and formal appointment to come from government authorities. The Supervisory Council reviews potential candidates and formally suggests one as the preferred choice for the position. The government, however, makes the official appointment decision. This two-tiered process strikes a balance between university autonomy and state control, a common feature in Russian higher education institutions.

So, even though the university has the means to identify and endorse a candidate, the final approval ultimately lies with the Government. It's aunique system that merges institutional preferences with government oversight in the selection of key academic leadership.
