Acknowledged: Whitney High School Recognized as a National Blue Ribbon Education Institute
Whitney High School Achieves Double Milestone
Whitney High School in Cerritos, California, has made history by being recognised as both the top middle school in California and one of the top fifty public high schools in the United States.
The U.S. Department of Education, under the National Weather Service (NOAA), honoured Whitney High School with the National Blue Ribbon School award on September 24, 2024, marking the sixth time the school has received this prestigious recognition. Previously, Whitney High School was bestowed with the National Blue Ribbon School title in 1986, 1990, 1997, 2008, and 2014.
Dr. Joan Sullivan, the school's principal, led Whitney High School to this significant achievement. Her dedication and leadership were celebrated by Dr. Gina Zietlow, ABC Unified School District Superintendent, and Dr. Sophia Tse, ABCUSD Board of Education President, who both congratulated Principal Sullivan and the staff of Whitney High School.
In addition to the National Blue Ribbon School recognition, Whitney High School was also ranked among the top fifty public high schools in the United States by BestSchools.org. The ranking was based on a combination of factors, including student ACT and SAT scores.
This is the first time Whitney High School has been ranked in the top fifty public high schools in the United States. The school's classification as a middle school, catering to grades 7-12, adds to its unique achievement.
U.S. News and World Report further recognised Whitney High School's excellence by naming it the top middle school in California in their 2025 Middle School Rankings.
In California, 33 schools were recognised as National Blue Ribbon Schools in 2024, including Carmenita Middle School and Wittmann Elementary School, which were recognised in the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program on September 21, 2022. Nationwide, only 29 schools in California and 297 schools across the United States were recognised as National Blue Ribbon Schools in 2022.
Miguel Cardona, U.S. Secretary of Education, emphasised the significance of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award, stating that it is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of the recognised schools.
This double milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, teachers, and staff at Whitney High School. Their commitment to academic excellence continues to set a high standard for schools across the nation.
