Academic Integrity Honors Given to Devoted Faculty Members for Outstanding Service and Influence
Syracuse University's Academic Integrity Program Recognizes Outstanding Faculty Members
The Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) at Syracuse University has honoured Aileen Gallagher and Laura Lisnyczyj with the Academic Integrity Outstanding Service Awards. These awards are given to recognize the achievements of faculty volunteers in maintaining academic integrity standards across the University.
During the 2024-25 academic year, Aileen Gallagher served as the academic integrity coordinator for the Newhouse School. She spearheaded campaigns to share procedural updates and modeled positive academic integrity collaborations. Gallagher's comprehensive case submission, faculty interview completion, and faculty panelist service to the academic integrity office were commendable.
Laura Lisnyczyj, an assistant teaching professor of languages, literatures and linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, has also made significant contributions. She has helped improve the academic integrity seminar, faculty reporting forms, and policy violation and sanction classification rubric. Lisnyczyj is an academic integrity champion in the classroom, helping students navigate situations and questions.
The CTLE's academic integrity program plays a vital role in educating and supporting the university community in understanding, upholding, and enforcing academic integrity standards. The program provides resources, training, and workshops that help teaching assistants, students, and faculty recognize integrity violations and manage them appropriately, fostering a culture of ethical scholarship and accountability.
Key aspects of the CTLE’s program include training teaching assistants on university-specific integrity policies, highlighting common and overlooked violations. It also uses case studies to illustrate definitions and consequences of violations, ensuring clarity and fairness in enforcement. The program supports a transparent and educative framework that promotes ethical behavior in teaching and learning environments.
The academic integrity team consists of two full-time employees, several part-time student panelists, a spring practicum student, and a pool of volunteers. The team works with faculty, instructors, students, and staff to promote understanding of the University's academic integrity policy. It maintains records of all academic integrity cases and creates online resources for classroom use.
Kate Marzen, the CTLE assistant director of academic expectations, stated that the recipients go well above and beyond for their department. The CTLE could not fulfill its responsibilities without the volunteers in the academic integrity program. The awards given to Gallagher and Lisnyczyj are a testament to their dedication and hard work in maintaining academic integrity standards at Syracuse University.
